  • AmeriCorps
  • Commonwealth Corps

The Commonwealth Corps service internship program offers Massachusetts residents the opportunity to engage in meaningful direct service, strengthening communities, addressing critical needs, and fostering volunteerism. Through this experience, members gain professional skills and invaluable hands-on knowledge, while making a lasting impact on diverse populations across the state.

The Massachusetts Service Alliance (MSA) oversees the program, ensuring that both host site partners and members receive the support needed to thrive.

Two Commonwealth Corps members served during the 2024-2025 service term with NAAM joining a diverse cohort of individuals passionate about service and community engagement. Our Commonwealth Corps members served as Digital Literacy and Outreach Associates across the North Shore, Lowell, Greater Boston, and MetroWest regions. They developed and facilitated digital literacy sessions, equipping immigrants and refugees with essential technological skills while supporting their participation in ESOL programming and NAAM’s communications efforts. This immersive experience allowed members to lead impactful initiatives, collaborate with diverse communities, and build valuable connections in the field of immigrant and refugee support.

Voices of Impact: Service Experiences

Danny's Story

During my service term, I learned the importance of teamwork and collaboration when making a difference in your community. In the last year I have made connections to other organizations for the purpose of furthering each other’s missions. I am so grateful to have shared NAAM’s mission with my colleagues inside AND outside the organization. I feel I have grown as a person and developed a new passion for helping others.

Conducting my very own Tech Goes Home class was a pivotal experience for me, and I loved getting to know a diverse group of students all brought together with the goal of achieving digital literacy. I developed my skills as an instructor, and they gained crucial skills in a largely digital job market. I was so proud of my students and myself.

Immigrant day at the State House was very enjoyable for me, and I loved the experience of learning about other people’s backgrounds and journeys coming to the United States. It was also very exciting to meet with local politicians and establish connections while advocating for legislation that serves our communities.

I have learned so much about the nonprofit world and how to communicate with others, even if there is a language barrier. My eyes have also been opened to the massive number of opportunities related to nonprofit work, and all the ways I can support vulnerable populations in their efforts to better their lives and their families’ lives.

Samuel's Story

Serving with NAAM through the Commonwealth Corps was an incredibly transformative experience for me, personally and professionally. During my service term, I gained a deep appreciation for the role community-based organizations play in preserving cultural heritage and promoting equity. I developed a stronger sense of purpose and sharpened my ability to collaborate across diverse teams and with the broader community.

One of the projects I enjoyed most involved supporting NAAM’s teaching programming. Working directly with students, I helped design interactive digital literacy materials that made learning accessible and engaging. We created activities that blend technology with cultural storytelling, allowing students to explore their identities while building practical skills.

In addition, I also supported the organization’s internal operations by helping to set up and streamline communication and donor management tools. I implemented platforms like Givebutter and Little Green Light to improve our fundraising and grant tracking systems. These tools helped the team more effectively engage with supporters, track donor activity, and manage grant deadlines, all of which contributed to building a more sustainable and transparent infrastructure. It was rewarding to see how these improvements in tech setup could impact our ability to serve the community and sustain our mission.

I had many joyful moments with NAAM. One experience that consistently stands out as both cheerful and deeply meaningful was facilitating the weekly digital literacy class every Friday. These sessions became more than just a time to learn technology; they became a vibrant, supportive community. Each week, individuals came together to gain new digital skills and uplift one another through laughter, shared challenges, and collective growth.

We navigated everything from knowing our computers to mastering internet search for resources and applying for resources, but the most valuable part was the spirit in the room. For many, it was a space of empowerment, where technology became less intimidating and more of a tool for connection and possibility. The encouragement we gave each other, celebrating every “aha” moment, cheering when someone mastered a new skill, fostered a sense of pride and momentum that rippled into different areas of our lives. It was a safe space, full of joy and kindness. People felt seen, capable, and connected. Every Friday felt like a gathering of possibility, and I always looked forward to it. The impact of that space still stays with me; it reminded me how transformative learning can be when it’s rooted in community and care.

Professionally, this service term helped me grow as a leader. I learned how to balance administrative tasks with direct service, gained experience in program planning, and became more confident in public speaking and facilitation. I also grew my grant writing skills, communication tool set, and interpersonal skills working with diverse groups. Personally, it reaffirmed my commitment to social justice and community empowerment, values I will carry forward in all my future work.

I am grateful for the opportunity to have served with NAAM and the Commonwealth Corps. The experience helped me grow and deepen my connection to a mission-driven community that continues to inspire me. A huge thank you to MSA and the NAAMily!

Voices of Impact: NAAM Internship

Internships at the New American Association of Massachusetts (NAAM) provide a unique opportunity for students and emerging professionals to gain hands-on experience in immigrant advocacy, social services, and nonprofit operations. Interns contribute to meaningful projects, supporting newly arriving refugees and immigrants as they build stable lives and integrate into their communities.

Through direct engagement in education, workforce development, Summer Program support, communication and outreach efforts, along with office management interns develop valuable skills in program coordination, communications, and community engagement. Whether assisting with English language instruction, employment services, or resource navigation, interns play a key role in NAAM’s mission to empower and uplift newcomers.

Internships at NAAM are ideal for individuals who are passionate about social justice, cultural exchange, and community building. This experience offers networking opportunities, professional growth, and the chance to make a tangible impact in the lives of immigrants and refugees.

Diego's Story

Throughout my internship experience with NAAM, I have had the pleasure to establish meaningful connections while strengthening valuable interpersonal skills that contribute to the growing development of my professional career, including advocacy for human rights despite citizenship status. As a Youth Program Intern, I was able to assist the youth that came by engaging in conversation and initiating recreational activities to enhance their further development. I am grateful to the organization for providing the necessary space for the youth to have interaction with staff because it provides a sense of familiarity and inclusion despite the differences in comfortability in social scenarios within each of them. As a psychology major interested in working with preadolescent children in clinical settings, it is essential to place into perspective how the formation of behavior is modulated based on the occurrence of alternative social placements, which influences cognitive patterns, and I believe that NAAM has provided me with this insight into real-life contexts. An additional aspect of my internship responsibilities was to conduct necessary administrative tasks as needed in relation to client documentation. I was fortunate to collaborate alongside the employment specialist to provide interpretation support to clients that do not dominate the English language by articulating main points of conversation in their preferred language. Furthermore, I was given the opportunity to enhance proficiency in computer skills by acquiring data collection and placing entries in spreadsheets. NAAM, as a non-profit organization, provides a unique experience for any individual looking to obtain an internship by allowing them to become part of a diverse collaborative environment where they are encouraged to share their ideas, which aligns with their mission statement that clarifies equal opportunity for all.
